You have a Target gift card in your hand and no idea what is left on it. Maybe it sat in a drawer since the holidays, maybe you spent part of it and lost track. Here is how to find the number in under a minute — including the method that works when you do not have a Target account and do not want to make one.

The short answer

  • Online: go to target.com/giftcard/check-balance and enter your 15-digit card number plus the access number. You will need to be signed in to a Target account.
  • No account? Call 1-800-544-2943. The automated line reads out your balance and your last five transactions. No login, no sign-up.
  • In store: any Target cashier or the guest services desk can scan the card and tell you the balance.
  • Australia: Target AU cards are a separate system — check them at the Target Australia site, not target.com.

Check your Target gift card balance online

This is the fastest route if you already have a Target account. You need two numbers, and both live on the back of the card.

1

Find your card number and access number

Flip the card over. The 15-digit card number is printed along the back. The access number (some people call it the PIN) hides under a silver scratch-off strip. Scratch it gently with a coin or a fingernail. Press too hard and you can scrape away the digits underneath, which is a genuinely annoying problem to fix.

On an eGiftCard sent by email, both numbers are printed in the email itself. There is nothing to scratch.

2

Open the balance page

Go to target.com/giftcard/check-balance. Target will ask you to sign in. If you do not have an account, skip ahead to the phone method below. It is quicker than creating one.

3

Enter both numbers

Type the 15 digits, then the access number, then submit. Your remaining balance appears on screen. If the card is already saved to your account, you can skip all of this: open the Target app, tap My Target → Settings → Gift cards, and every card you have added is listed with its current balance.

Getting an "invalid card" error? Nine times out of ten it is the access number, not the card. Re-read the scratched strip in good light: 0 and 8, 5 and 6, 1 and 7 are all easy to confuse. If the digits are genuinely damaged, the phone line or the guest services desk can still look the card up.

How to check a Target gift card balance without an account

This is the part most guides skip. Target's online balance checker sits behind a login, which is why so many people search for a way around it. There are two, and neither needs an account.

Works

Call 1-800-544-2943

  • Automated line, available around the clock
  • Reads your balance out loud
  • Also reads your last five transactions
  • No account, no sign-up, no email address
Works

Walk into a Target

  • Any register or the guest services desk
  • Staff scan the card and read the balance
  • Useful when the scratch strip is damaged
  • No purchase required

Have the card in front of you when you call — the line asks for the card number, and on some cards the access number too. The whole call takes about a minute.

Avoid third-party "balance checker" sites. Searching for a balance check turns up a lot of sites that are not Target. Handing your full card number and PIN to a random site is the most common way gift cards get drained, because those two numbers are all anyone needs to spend the money. Use target.com, the phone line, or a physical store. Nothing else.

Why your balance is lower than you expected

A balance check does not always show what people assume it will. These are the usual explanations.

A pending order is holding funds

If you used the card on an online order that has not shipped, that amount is already deducted even though the order is not complete.

You split a payment and forgot

Target lets you pay part of a basket with a gift card and the rest with a card. It is easy to forget the gift card absorbed part of it.

It was a promotional card

Cards from "spend $50, get a $10 gift card" deals sometimes carry an expiry on the promotional portion. The main balance on a standard Target GiftCard does not expire.

The card was compromised

If the balance is zero on a card you never spent, it was likely drained. Call Target with your receipt. An unspent card bought with a traceable payment is your strongest case.

A standard Target GiftCard does not expire and carries no maintenance fees. If a card shows less than you expect, the money went somewhere. It did not evaporate.

Checking a Target Australia gift card

Worth flagging, because this trips a lot of people up: Target Australia and Target US are unrelated companies. A card from one will not work at the other, and target.com cannot look up an Australian card.

If your card was bought in Australia and is redeemable at Target or Target Country stores there, check it through the Target Australia gift card portal instead. The card number and PIN are in the same places — printed on the back, PIN under the scratch panel — but the lookup happens on a different system entirely.

Your balance is short. Now what?

This is where most people land. You checked the card, there is $12.40 on it, and the thing you wanted costs $60. You have two options: leave the card in a drawer, or top up the difference.

Target does not let you reload a GiftCard once it is issued. What you can do is buy a second card and use both at checkout. Target accepts multiple gift cards on a single order, and will pull the remainder from another payment method if there is still a gap. That turns a stranded $12.40 into part of a real purchase instead of dead money.

Top up your Target balance in about two minutes

How topping up through Refillarena works

1

Pick the amount you are short

Denominations run $5, $10, $15, $20, $25, $30, $40, $50, $60, $75, $100 and upward to $1,750. If your card has $12.40 and you need $60, a $50 card closes the gap with change to spare.

2

Pay with crypto

Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT, Litecoin and more than fifty others. You get a wallet address and an amount; send it and the order confirms once the network does.

3

Get your code and stack it at checkout

The code arrives by email and stays on your account page. At Target, apply your old card first to drain it completely, then apply the new one for the rest.

Worth knowing before you buy

  • Region matters. A US card works at target.com and US stores. An Australian card works at Target Australia. Pick the one matching where you shop — they are not interchangeable.
  • Drain the small card first. Apply the nearly-empty card at checkout before the new one, or you will be left with an odd balance again.
  • Save the code. Keep the email or leave it on your account page. A gift card code is cash in text form, and anyone who reads it can spend it.
