The most common reason a Steam code fails is not a bad code. It is a currency mismatch: the card was bought for one region and the wallet runs in another. This guide explains how Steam ties a wallet to a currency, how to check yours in under a minute, and which card to buy.
How Steam handles wallet currency
Every Steam wallet has one currency. It is set from the country on your account the first time you add funds, and it does not switch on its own when you travel or change your IP address. A wallet code is issued in a specific currency, so it has to match the wallet it is going into.
If your wallet is brand new and empty, the first code you redeem sets the currency. Steam may ask you to confirm your address while it does this. Once the wallet holds a balance or has purchase history, later codes need to be in that same currency.
Check your wallet currency first
- Log in to Steam and click your account name in the top right corner.
- Open Account details.
- Look at the wallet balance and its symbol (for example $, EUR, AED or SAR), and at the prices shown on the store page.
That symbol is the currency you buy for. Write it down before opening the shop.
Which Steam card to pick
| If your wallet is in | Choose on Refillarena | Available amounts |
| US dollars | Steam USA | 5, 10, 20, 30, 50, 100, 200 USD |
| Euros | Steam EU | 5, 20, 25, 30, 35 EUR |
| Dirhams | Steam UAE | 20, 40, 50, 100, 200, 400 AED |
| Saudi riyals | Steam KSA | 20, 50, 100, 200, 400 SAR |
| Qatari riyals | Steam Qatar | 20, 50, 100, 200, 400 QAR |
| Kuwaiti dinars | Steam Kuwait | 5, 10, 20, 30 KWD |
| Another currency | Poland, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, South Africa | Listed on the product page |
Stock changes, so treat the amounts above as a snapshot and confirm them on the Steam gift card page.
USD or your local currency?
If your wallet already runs in dollars, buy the USD card. If it runs in euros or a local currency, buy that one. Do not buy a dollar card for a euro wallet just because the denominations look more convenient. The code will not convert.
New account holders have a real choice, because the first redemption sets the currency. Think about where you will spend. Game prices in some regions differ from the US store, and local regions can have regional pricing. That is a decision about how you want to shop on Steam, and it is worth making before you load the first balance, because it is hard to undo later.
Steam restricts changing the store country, and a wallet with a balance cannot simply switch currency. Do not try to bypass this with a VPN. Valve can lock the account or the balance if it detects a mismatch.
Paying with crypto
On Refillarena you pay with Bitcoin, USDT or another supported coin, and the code is sent to your email. The full walkthrough is in our guide on buying a Steam gift card with crypto. The only extra step for this topic is to pick the right region on the product page before adding to the cart.
Redeem the code
- Log in to Steam and click your account name, then Account details.
- Choose Add funds to your Steam wallet.
- Click Redeem a Steam wallet code.
- Enter the code from your email and click Continue.
If a code is refused
- Compare the card currency with the wallet currency. This is the cause in most cases.
- Type the code again by hand and check for copied spaces.
- Make sure you are signed in to the right Steam account.
- If everything matches and it still fails, send support the order number and a screenshot of the error.
Ready to buy? Open the Steam gift card page, pick the region that matches your wallet, and pay with crypto.
