Discord sells two paid tiers: Nitro and Nitro Basic. They share a name and a lot of marketing, but they are built for different users. This page explains what each one adds, who should pick which, and how the two differ from the free account. Perks change over time, so confirm the current list in your Discord app under Settings, Nitro before paying.
The short version
- Stay on free if you chat, join voice channels and rarely upload large files.
- Nitro Basic if your main want is custom emoji everywhere and a slightly higher upload limit.
- Nitro if you stream to friends, boost servers, or want the full profile customisation.
What Nitro Basic gives you
Nitro Basic is the cheaper tier. It is aimed at people who like using emoji from their favourite servers in every other server, and who want a bigger upload limit than a free account. It does not include server boosts or the high quality streaming options.
What full Nitro adds
- A much larger file upload limit.
- Higher resolution and frame rate screen sharing in voice channels.
- Two server boosts included, plus a discount on extra boosts.
- Animated avatar and banner, and a profile you can customise further.
- Longer messages.
- Custom emoji and stickers usable in every server.
The boost perk is the one most people overlook. A server boost helps unlock better voice quality and more emoji slots for a whole community, so full Nitro can be worth it for someone who runs or helps run a server.
Which plan fits which user
| You are | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A casual chatter | Free | Nothing in the paid tiers changes how chat or voice works. |
| An emoji and sticker fan | Nitro Basic | You get the cross-server emoji at the lower price. |
| A streamer or screen-sharer | Nitro | Better stream quality is a full Nitro feature. |
| A server owner or moderator | Nitro | Included boosts help the community directly. |
| Buying for a friend | Nitro | Hard to be disappointed by the full perk list. |
Monthly or yearly?
At the time of writing, Refillarena lists Nitro Basic for 1 month at about USD 4.80, Nitro for 1 month at about USD 10.29, and Nitro for 12 months at about USD 95. Twelve months of Nitro works out to roughly USD 7.90 per month, against about USD 10.29 paid monthly. If you plan to keep Nitro for the whole year, the yearly code is the better deal. If you are not sure, start with one month.
Why a code can be easier than paying directly
Discord billing rejects many cards and some regions, and it does not take crypto directly. A gift card code avoids the billing step: you buy the code with Bitcoin or USDT, then activate it on Discord. If you have had a declined payment, our guide Discord Nitro payment declined explains the common causes and the full workaround.
How to get started
- Open the Discord Nitro page.
- Choose Nitro Basic (1 month), Nitro (1 month) or Nitro (12 months).
- Pay with crypto and wait for the confirmation email.
- Follow the redeem steps in the email to activate it on your Discord account.
Only redeem through the instructions you were sent, and never share the code in a Discord chat or direct message. Support staff will never ask you for it.
